Science for a sustainable economy
Ostrom Polymers is dedicated to reducing the environmental burden of plastics.
The transformation of plastic waste into a useful commodity requires imagining new products and new ways of creating them. Ostrom Polymers has created plastic composites that contain up to 97% recycled content and can outperform virgin resin. By increasing the demand for recycled resin, we can incentivize the global economy to divert plastic waste away from our landfills. Ostrom Polymers continues to develop new composites to meet consumer demand whilst striving to improve our natural environment.
Why it matters
A mere 9% of plastics are recycled and if this dismal rate continues it is projected that by 2025 the ocean will contain one tonne of plastic for every three tonnes of fish. The greenhouse gas impact of plastics production is also enormous. Currently, plastic production accounts for 6% of global oil consumption and the dumping or burning of plastic waste adds another 850 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere annually. Put simply, far too much plastic ends up as waste.
The time is now
Since the early 20th century, plastics have been instrumental in transforming our society – from food freshness to electricity transmission to computing power, sterile medical equipment, and the reduction of transport costs. Plastics have made many common goods cheaper, lighter, safer, and stronger. Their use has become ingrained in our everyday lives. However, the environmental and human health costs from the short life-cycle of most plastics cannot be ignored.
